Preventing Suicide and Self Harm
The Aer Arann Half Marathon charity partner, Pieta House, has helped over 30,000 people since it opened its doors in 2006. Now with 15 centres across Ireland, Pieta House provides free, professional therapeutic services to people in suicidal distress or engaging in self-harm, and to those who have been bereaved by suicide.
Pieta House employs almost 270 staff, the majority of which are the therapists who work directly with those who need their help. The demand for its services continues to grow, with over 6,000 clients in 2016 alone. Fully qualified staff provide a professional, one-on-one therapeutic service, as well as a 24-hour Freephone helpline. Pieta House uses a solution-focused therapy model, and its approach is rooted in compassion and care. Unlike many mental health services, clients can self-refer, or be referred into the service by a friend or family member, without the need for a psychiatric report or GP referral.
As Pieta House relies on the generosity of the public for 85% of its income, fundraising events like the Aer Arann Half Marathon are vital to its continued success, and to allow the charity to help those most in need, and we are delighted to partner with Pieta House for the 2018 event.
